Hereditary peer -  descendant of the historian Lord Acton best known for the dictum  'absolute power corrupts absolutely'. Made a life peer in 2000.  Formerly married to Judith Garfield Todd 1974 -87.

Baroness  Adams 2005
As Irene Adams, MP Paisley North 1990 - 2005. As the  seat was formerly held by her late husband from 1979 until his death  in 1990, she is no stranger to the herediary principle. Never held  ever any ministerial office and always voted the same way as Tony  Blair in the 2001-5 Parliament.
In 2003-4 she claimed £137,000  in expenses, 49th in the whole House.
She also voted for a fully  appointed House of Lords in 2003 - so is consistent with her  principles.

As part of  the same effort to portray himself as 'independent' he also quit the  Labour Party to which he had previously made 'small donations.'Like  some other put my image first types, Currie now sits on the cross  benches while still loving New Labour.
