Russia, China confrontation feared

The governor of Russia's Far East territory warns Chinese migration in the region could lead to a Russia-China confrontation in the next 10 to 15 years.

Speaking in Moscow Monday, Viktor Ishayev, governor of Khabarovsk Territory which borders China, said Moscow doesn't seem to have a clear policy in the region, the Novosti news agency reported.

He said a political or economic confrontation can be averted with more Russian investment in the regional economy and infrastructure.

Ishayev said migration should not be seen as a bad thing, but should be used to Russia's advantage.

"The idea is to make the most of China's proximity and its human resources," he said.

The governor plans to hold the first Far East international economic congress in September to discuss both the demographic problems as well as cooperation with Asia-Pacific countries.
